Pi Day
It might seem a bit odd for a bakery to find a mathmatical constant so exciting, but we’re not an ordinary bakery. One of our owners, Tom Daly, is a graduate engineer from Virginia Tech, and he has a passion for all things science and techology. He also has a passion for baked goods. It’s only on Pi Day that these two passions overlap, which is why at Rise Bake Shoppe, we celebrate March 14th as if it’s a holiday!

For those of you who aren’t familiar, Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14 in the American date format) as a tribute to the mathematical constant, Pi (π). The symbol π represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter and is approximately equal to 3.14. Pi has been known for almost 4,000 years and has been approximated to over 1 trillion digits after the decimal point.
Pi Day was first officially recognized as a holiday by the US House of Representatives in 2009. The holiday was created by Physicist Larry Shaw in 1988 at the Exploratorium, a science museum in San Francisco. Since then, Pi Day has become a widely celebrated event, with people hosting Pi-themed events, eating pies, and even reciting the digits of Pi. In recent years, Pi Day has been embraced by mathematicians, educators, and students alike, who use the occasion to promote mathematics education and celebrate the study of circles and their properties.
We’re excited to announce that we are bringing back our limited edition Pi Day Pies this year - a perfect gift for the educator, engineer, or mathematician in your life!
