Shoofly Pies
Traditional Shoofly Pie
Shoofly Pie is a traditional dessert pie from the Pennsylvania Dutch region of the United States. As a bakery founded in Lancaster County, our wet-bottom recipe goes back decades (and likely generations!) It's a molasses-based pie that gets its name from the "shoo-fly" flies like the ones from Lancaster County farms that were attracted to the sweet molasses mixture during baking. The pie is made with a crumbly, shortbread-like crust and a gooey molasses filling that is usually spiced with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.
Our pie crust is made with a combination of flour, sugar, and butter. The molasses-based filling is poured over the crust, which helps to absorb the liquid and create that delicious shoofly texture.
Shoofly Pie is a popular local dessert and is often served with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. It's a sweet, rich, and slightly spicy pie that is perfect all year round, but is especially popular in the fall and winter months. If you’re visiting from out of the area, this is a favorite treat to bring home for your friends and family. Whether you're a fan of molasses or not, this classic dessert is definitely worth a try!
